Budget Forum
Clayton’s staff and elected officials are dedicated to their fiscal responsibility to the community. Annually, the city conducts public meetings to ensure that citizens understand and have a say in how their tax dollars are spent. This year, the city conducted a very successful campaign to increase attendance at these meetings. A total of sixty-three Clayton residents and business owners attended three public budget forums in June.
City Manager Craig Owens provided a 30 minute presentation with details about Clayton’s 2012 Operating and Capital Improvements Budget. Following the presentation, the audience was asked to assemble into smaller groups. Each group discussed and debated budget details and developed a list of questions, comments and alternatives. The input from the audience and the subsequent dialogue provided the basis for changes staff made to the draft budget that will be presented to the Board of Aldermen at public hearings on Tuesdays, August 23 and September 27. The public hearings are the formal setting for reviewing the city’s annual budget and provide additional opportunities for public discourse.
