Message from the Chief

A Message from the Chief to our Citizens, Businesses and Visitors.

Welcome to the Clayton Fire Department web site! This site is an easy portal for you to access information about YOUR fire department, permit process and most importantly to reflect the great pride within our department. Since the Clayton Fire Departments’ inception in 1897, it has been our mission to provide a safe environment for residents, business community, and visitors in the City of Clayton by providing ongoing public education, fire prevention and inspection programs, and rapid and professional response for fire, rescue, medical and other emergencies.

The Clayton Fire Department strives to provide the highest quality of service to those we serve. This commitment to service is evident by our many department, unit and crew awards. In 2000, the Clayton Fire Department was dignified with the honor of being named Emergency Medical Service of the year award for outstanding medical service and education to the community.  It is also noteworthy to mention that through diligent fire prevention programs, the Clayton Fire Department is proud to say that there has not been a civilian or firefighter fatality in over 100 years. The Clayton Fire Department strives to be the best and will do whatever it takes to make sure that we are proactive in our efforts to keep our residents, businesses and visitors safe within the City of Clayton.

The Clayton Fire department of today has grown to 36 full time employees, 35 uniformed personnel and one civilian support staff, separated into three operating shifts of 11 personnel each. Each shift operates with one Battalion Chief, two Captains, one Medical Officer and seven Firefighter/Paramedic/EMT’s. Our members work 48 hours on and 96 hours off. This new schedule took effect in January 2011.

The members of the Clayton Fire Department are proud to serve you.

Mark Thorp, Fire Chief
