Civil War Comes to the Hanley House Sun., March 20
This mini-event is a precursor to the main event, Camp Jackson: The Tipping Point, from April 29 to May 1st at Jefferson Barracks.
The Historic Hanley House in Clayton, Missouri will welcome Civil War reenactors to Hanley Park on Sunday, March 20 from noon to 3 p.m. Local reenactors will be demonstrating what life was like for St. Louisans in the grips of war. Ladies will be inside the Historic Hanley House preparing for the men to leave for battle while soldiers will be positioned outside the home performing military drills. The demonstration of living history will serve to commemorate the Civil War Sesquicentennial in St. Louis. The event is free and open to the public.
Martin Franklin Hanley built the Historic Hanley House in 1855. The farmstead is the oldest structure in the City of Clayton and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The restored home is today an historic house museum filled with original family furnishings, artifacts and letters that together represent an honest portrayal of 19th century Missouri life.
During the war, Martin F. Hanley maintained a neutral position while in the public eye, but the members of the Hanley family were Secessionists. A tour of the museum will demonstrate the ways in which the women of the household aided the Confederacy. Visitors will also view the surviving detached kitchen which served as the slave quarters for the Hanley farm.
The Historic Hanley House is open to the public April through October on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. Tours are also available by appointment. Cost is $5 per adult, $2 for children age 6 to 12, children 5 and under are free. Visit www.HanleyHouse.org for more information or call 314-226-9893.
