Clayton Century Foundation Announced
The City of Clayton plans for its 100th anniversary
December 17, 2007
The Mayor and Board of Aldermen announced that the Clayton Century Foundation would be established to plan for the 100th anniversary of the City of Clayton’s incorporation in 2013.
The mission of the Clayton Century Foundation is to celebrate the city, plan festivities for the 100th year, embrace the city’s history, and enhance cultural amenities like parks and public art. The foundation will provide a coordinated umbrella for fund raising activities and offer a menu of choices for special contributions.
The foundation will encourage wide participation from corporate and private citizens, including time, talent and tax-deductible donations. These funds will be used to support the kind of projects that go beyond what the city budget can provide but are essential to fortify the fabric of the community for future generations.
Special projects include the revival of the Clayton History Society, publishing a new edition of Clayton History and restoration of the oldest house in Clayton, built in 1855 by a Virginia farmer, Martin Franklin Hanley, in what is now Hanley Park. “With a vision for the future, we hope many people will be excited about assisting with these projects as well as planning festivities to celebrate our special year,” says Alderman Judy R. Goodman. The announcement was made at the Dec. 7, 2007 Clayton Chamber of Commerce annual State of the City breakfast meeting.
