Clayton Observes Local Government Week

Governor Jay Nixon recently issued a proclamation declaring the first week of May as Local Government Week to showcase services and create awareness of the important role city government plays in the lives of all Missouri citizens.

The City of Clayton conducted several activities in honor of Local Government Week.

Thank You for Your Hard Work Picnic

On May 6, 2010, to recognize the hard work and high quality services provided to the Clayton community, the Human Resources Department invited city staff to a “thank you for your hard work” picnic. At 11:30 a.m., approximately 120 full time employees gathered in the Corporate Tent in the Shaw Park, where they enjoyed sandwiches, chips, drinks and the ice cream treats. The sharp shooters participated in the washer tournament that followed lunch. The champs were awarded medals.

Rec Center Celebrates 10th Anniversary

On May 1, the community was invited to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the opening of The Center of Clayton, a unique collaboration between the city and the School District of Clayton. From 7 am. to 7 p.m., the celebration at The Center was open to the public. Festivities were scheduled throughout the day highlighting the variety of amenities that are available to the community. In addition to the free admission, discounts were offered on fees for membership and programs. Guests were treated to refreshments. Gift bags were won during the hourly drawings. Organized games were held in the pool, gymnasiums and Youth Activity Center. Ten-yeared employees were also recognized during the day-long celebration.

City Installs BigBelly

City staff is committed to maintaining Clayton’s leadership in environmental initiatives and reducing the city carbon foot print. Through efforts of the PlanIt! Green Team, a committee comprised of representatives from each city department, the city recently launched a campaign to become the first city in the region to earn “Green Power Community” designation in a new partnership with the EPA. The designation will make Clayton one of only 28 cities in the United States to qualify as a Green Power Community.

On April 27, the BigBelly Solar Trash Compactor and recycle bin were unveiled in front of City Hall. The BigBelly is a patented compacting trash receptacle that is completely self-powered. The BigBelly uses solar power for 100% of its energy needs. The unit has the same "footprint" as an ordinary receptacle, but its capacity is five times greater. Increased capacity reduces collection trips, cuts fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions by 80%.

Outstanding Citizens Award

In addition to recognizing city staff for its service to the community, Clayton’s Board of Aldermen recognized a group of its dynamic citizens at the annual Crème de la Clayton award ceremony on April 27. This program was established to recognize citizens for extraordinary contributions to the Clayton community.  This year, fourteen individuals were awarded the Crème de la Clayton ceramic note pad and pencil holder. Their contributions included work toward neighborhood nominations to the National Registry of Historic Places, years of service on resident advisory committees and acts of kindness and generosity. “Our community is fortunate to have citizens who help to make such a wonderful place to live and work,” said Mayor Linda Goldstein. The city has honored its special citizens with Crème de la Clayton awards since 2005. Photos from the 2010 ceremony are available on Clayton’s website www.ci.clayton.mo.us
