Clayton: Tree City USA - Nineteen Consecutive Years
May 17, 2011
Clayton Named Tree City USA for the Nineteenth Consecutive Year by the National Arbor Day Foundation
Clayton was among the cities named Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation again in 2011. The City was honored for its commitment to urban forestry and for demonstrating progress in its community forestry program. Clayton met four standards to become a Tree City USA community. It has a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program with annual expenditures and an Arbor Day observance.
In addition to its Tree City USA designation, the City has received the National Arbor Day Growth Award for the past five years. This award recognizes organizations for expanding and improving their arboriculture programs, which Clayton accomplished this year by distributing tree saplings to Clayton school students. In early April, the City’s three foresters distributed 180 tree saplings to 4th grade elementary school children in Clayton to celebrate National Arbor Day. The foresters gave a presentation to the 4th graders and their teachers on the meaning of Arbor Day and the importance of trees.
“These awards acknowledge Clayton’s commitment to caring for its tree population,” said Clayton’s Mayor Linda Goldstein. “I commend our forestry staff and community volunteers for recognizing the important benefits trees provide the community every day and for their part in caring for our trees.”
