December 11, 2007 Proclaimed OASIS Day in Clayton

On Dec. 11, 2007, Clayton’s Board of Aldermen proclaimed December 11, 2007 OASIS Day. The proclamation was presented to Marylen Mann who founded the OASIS program in 1982. OASIS was created to nurture the mind, healthy and spirit of adults aged 50 and older. The program started with private-public support locally and has grown to a national network in 26 cities.

At the Dec. 11 Board meeting, Ms. Mann said that she could not have accomplished all that she did without the help of a public-private partnership with the City of Clayton and the School District of Clayton. “Not-for-profits need government agencies and this partnership is an example of what can be accomplished when they get together.”

The organization, which now serves more than 360,000 adults, has an annual network funding base of $22 million and is the largest education and volunteer service organization for mature adults in the U.S., celebrates is 25th anniversary this year.
