Shaw Park Ice Rink Celebrates 50 Years
November 17, 2011
The Shaw Park Ice Rink officially opened with a ribbon cutting event on Sunday, November 5, 1961. Part of a $175,000 bond issue paid for the construction of the open air rink which was designed by Peter Carver and Associates, rink builders who created the Squaw Valley Olympic Skating Rink in California for the 1960 Winter Olympics. General admission during the inaugural season was $.75 for adults and $.40 for children.
One of the few remaining outdoor ice rinks in the St Louis metro area, Shaw Park Ice Rink still fascinates visitors with its vintage design juxtaposed against Clayton’s dynamic downtown skyline.
Opening day, Friday, November 25, (weather permitting) not only kicks off the start of the 2011-2012 Season, it begins the celebration of 50 years at Shaw Park Ice Rink. To help get the season started, hot chocolate and treats will be available to patrons throughout the day.
Special events scheduled for the rink this year include the free Skate with Frosty on Friday, December 2, New Year’s Eve Skate, and 50th Anniversary Celebration on February 20. The rink also hosts adult hockey leagues and Stick and Puck sessions.
