City of Clayton Announces New Fire Chief
Clayton’s City Manager Craig Owens is pleased to announce the appointment of John Paul Jones as Chief of the Clayton Fire Department effective January 22, 2019.
"I am both excited and gratified to accept the opportunity to lead the Clayton Fire Department as its next Chief,” said Chief Jones. “There is a great sense of pride within this department. The commitment to excellence in providing the highest level of service to the community is what attracted me to the Clayton Fire Department. I look to the future with great pride and anticipation, knowing the men and women of this department are among the finest fire and emergency medical providers anywhere.”
Chief Jones joins the City of Clayton after serving for over 30 years with the Kansas City Kansas Fire Department (KCKFD). His last ten years with KCKFD were spent as Fire Chief overseeing an annual budget of approximately $54 million and 457 employees. Chief Jones brings an extensive background in fire and emergency medical service and holds a BS from Kansas State University and a Master of Science in Fire Administration and Emergency Management from Oklahoma State University.
“Chief Jones obviously has an impressive record of accomplishments that matches the top professional reputation of the Clayton Fire Department,” said City Manager Owens. “His experience with a much larger department will serve us well as we strengthen regional capability.”
Chief Jones has served on regional, statewide, and national committees giving a voice to frontline fire and emergency medical service providers. Chief Jones has a been an advocate in working with community leaders to develop and increase minority and female presence in the fire and emergency medical service field and established programs to support their access and advancement. He’s served as the Co-Chair of the Homeland Security Policy Committee for the Kansas City metropolitan region and President of the Missouri Valley Division of the International Association of Fire Chiefs. Additionally, Chief Jones has a proven track record for innovation including the implementation of new technology and mobile data as well as the community-wide initiatives of HeartSafe, “hands only” CPR, and PulsePoint, an app empowering citizen to serve as responders that Clayton has just implemented.
