Shaw Park Ice Rink will be closed for the 2019-2020 season.

Shaw Park All-Season Recreation Complex

This project will include the construction of a year-round multi-use facility that will serve as an outdoor ice rink in the winter and a field/event space the remainder of the year. The existing ice rink opened in 1961 and, while it has served the community well over these past 55 years, is long past the life expectancy for a facility of this type. The system that operates the rink needs to be replaced; the slab is subject to significant thawing due to cracking and the underlying system during the season; and the building itself has deteriorated, in particular in the rooms that service the ice-making equipment. This project will enable us to address the needs of the rink while expanding space available for field sports as well as special events, both of which are in need of additional space.

Project Status

The previous design was unable to generate construction bids within budget. A new architect was selected in the summer of 2019 to redesign the project with a lower impact. Designs will be discussed at Parks and Recreation Commission meetings throughout the summer of 2019.

Shaw Park Ice Rink Update

Publish Date:01/25/2019 9:41 AM

Through community surveys and Master Plan developments, Clayton residents have continued to show support for a new facility to replace the aging Shaw Park Ice Rink.  Over the past two years, the City’s focus has been on the development of a design for a new facility that would not only serve as a community ice rink but also be usable throughout the year for programming and events.  Initially put out to bid last spring, the estimated cost exceeded available funds.   Since then the City looked for opportunities to reduce the scope of the project to bring the project in line with the budget.   Two options are being considered with efforts being focused on new funding sources, be they publicly supported or privately donated.  The Board has asked the Clayton Century Foundation to prioritize this project and explore opportunities with donors who may want to enter into a Public-Private Partnership to bring the vision for this community asset to fruition.

At this time, the project timeline has not been determined but the current rink will remain in operation barring any mechanical failures with the aging equipment.
