The Clayton Fire Department would like to welcome our newest member

Publish Date:02/24/2019 4:27 PM

The Clayton Fire Department would like to welcome our newest member, who was sworn in this week.  Matt Seithel became the 151st member of the department since our creation in 1897.

Matt grew up in St. Charles, Missouri and graduated from St Charles West High School in 2010.  Matt knew he wanted to join the fire service from an early age and earned his EMT license by going to tech school at night before graduating high school.  He moved to Columbia, Missouri and started his career with the Boone County Fire Protection District while completing his paramedic training.  Matt worked there for 8 years and then returned home to work at the Crestwood Fire Department for a year before applying to Clayton.  “I was drawn to Clayton for the diversity of the city,” Seithel says.  “There are many unique challenges the City of Clayton poses when it comes to fire protection and rescue. I wanted to challenge myself and expand my knowledge of these problems and help in any way I can. The City of Clayton Fire Department also has a strong, rich history and tradition of knowledgeable firefighters that are constantly trying to improve the fire service, and I wanted to surround myself with those individuals. I am extremely excited to be a member of the Clayton Fire Department and look forward to meeting the citizens out in public.”

Firefighter Seithel is the 3rd of 6 firefighters that will be added to the Clayton Fire Department as a result of passing Proposition 1 on November 6th of last year. Proposition 1 (Prop 1), the local use tax applies to out-of-state purchases over the amount of $2,000 per year. The use tax is already collected by the state on out-of-state purchases and Prop 1 will allow the City to receive revenue from these purchases as well.  The local use tax will not be charged in addition to sales tax. Sales tax is for retail purchases within the state of Missouri while the use tax is for purchases from out-of-state vendors, which are exempt from sales tax.

The need for additional staffing to improve service delivery has been demonstrated through studies and testing completed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).  The results and reports on residential and high-rise field experiments can be found on our website by following the links below.  We at the Clayton Fire Department feel as though these extra feet on the ground will help us to fulfill our mission of helping prepare our community for emergencies, supporting people when overwhelmed, and caring for them in their time of need.

We wish Matt well and look forward to seeing the great things that he will do as a member of the team.
