This project will include the construction of a year-round multi-use facility that will serve as an outdoor ice rink in the winter and a field/event space the remainder of the year. The existing ice rink opened in 1961 and, while it has served the community well over these past 55 years, is long past the life expectancy for a facility of this type. The system that operates the rink needs to be replaced; the slab is subject to significant thawing due to cracking and the underlying system during the season; and the building itself has deteriorated, in particular in the rooms that service the ice-making equipment. This project will enable us to address the needs of the rink while expanding space available for field sports as well as special events, both of which are in need of additional space.

The previous design was unable to generate construction bids within budget. A new architect was selected in the summer of 2019 to redesign the project with a lower impact. Designs will be discussed at Parks and Recreation Commission meetings throughout the summer of 2019.

Shaw Park All-Season Complex Redesign

Publish Date:05/20/2019

Chiodini Architects has been selected to create a new design for the Shaw Park All-Season Recreational Complex that will replace the aging Shaw Park Ice Rink. The project had previously stalled last summer after construction estimates far exceeded the available funds. The new firm brings a fresh perspective, innovative construction methods and ice rink experience that are all expected to produce a facility that fits within the established budget.

The architects will present their progress and seek public comments at Parks and Recreation Commission meetings throughout the summer. Meetings are held at The Center of Clayton on the first Monday of each month at 7:00 pm and will include June 10, August 5, and September 9. Please join the conversation to help create the best possible facility for the Clayton community. Please note that the July meeting has been canceled due to the holiday.

The Ice Rink is scheduled to be demolished this fall with no skating season this winter. The new facility is anticipated to open for the ice-skating season in late 2020.
