As the Center nears its twentieth year of operation, mechanical systems including the aquatic center air quality control unit are in need of replacement. These large systems have reached their life expectancy and replacement will enable the Center to continue to handle its large volume of daily visitors.  The project will also include enhancements of the member experience through improved and expanded amenities as well as energy conservation strategies.

Renovation Closures Begin June 12

We are excited to announce that the first major steps toward enhancing The Center of Clayton will take place next week! Phase 1 of the renovation will officially begin on Wednesday, June 12 with most closures taking place later in the week. We understand that these closures will be inconvenient for our members and program participants. Thank you for your understanding as we work to build a better community center for the future.

Areas impacted beginning June 12:

Subway will close for the renovation beginning Wednesday, June 12. Vending machines will be relocated in the lobby, but freshly prepared food cannot be offered on-site during this phase. Feel free to take advantage of the local eateries, including Subway’s Downtown Clayton location, that offer delivery to our building.

A portion of the west parking lot (pool side) will be closed for staging during construction. Some accessible parking spaces will be moved to the north lot (gym side) during this closure. No crowding issues are expected during the School District’s summer recess, and the parking lot expansion in the old mulch area is expected to be complete by the end of September.

Areas impacted beginning June 15:

Kid Center services will be moved to the first-floor meeting rooms on weekday mornings and second floor meeting rooms on Saturdays. Weekday evenings will vary – see the Welcome Desk for exact location at check-in. The Kid Center will move to its new home near the lobby in early 2020.

The Youth activity Center will be moved to the second-floor meeting rooms during renovation. No weekday morning or holiday hours will be held, and Sunday hours will change to 9:00 am -12:00 pm. TRX classes held in the YAC will be moved to the gymnasium, and the 8:30 am yoga class will be moved to a meeting room. The Youth Activity Center will reopen near the end of the project in its new home in the current administrative offices near Gym 2.

Pools and Rubber Courts Close July 1

The pools and rubber gymnasiums (courts 3 & 4) are still on track to meet our initial estimates of closing on July 1. Once this closure begins, Center members will have free access to the outdoor pools at Shaw Park Aquatic Center. The outdoor pool’s lap swimming hours will be extended to match hours at The Center. The Lap Swim Schedule is now available with details about the number of lanes available through early August.

Additional renovation updates will be sent by email as they become available. Project details are also available on the Center of Clayton Renovation webpage.
