This project will include the construction of a year-round multi-use facility that will serve as an outdoor ice rink in the winter and a field/event space the remainder of the year. The existing ice rink opened in 1961 and, while it has served the community well over these past 55 years, is long past the life expectancy for a facility of this type. The system that operates the rink needs to be replaced; the slab is subject to significant thawing due to cracking and the underlying system during the season; and the building itself has deteriorated, in particular in the rooms that service the ice-making equipment. This project will enable us to address the needs of the rink while expanding space available for field sports as well as special events, both of which are in need of additional space.

The previous design was unable to generate construction bids within budget. A new architect was selected in the summer of 2019 to redesign the project with a lower impact. Designs will be discussed at Parks and Recreation Commission meetings throughout the summer of 2019.

Help Shape Clayton's Newest Recreational Spaces

Publish Date:07/24/2019 4:24 PM

Join the Parks and Recreation Commission on Monday, August 5 at 7:00 pm at The Center of Clayton to get involved in two upcoming projects.

The meeting will begin with a discussion about the new park land on Maryland Avenue led by SWT Design. The City purchased the land at 7811 Maryland Avenue, directly next to the Mid-County Library, earlier in 2019. The space will become the city’s twelfth park once a plan is created and implemented.

The topic will shift around 7:30 pm to the latest designs for the new Shaw Park All-Season Recreational Complex that will replace the aging Ice Rink. Chiodini Architects has spent the summer working with staff and residents to narrow the focus of the facility’s site plan and layout to create a plan within budget. The project has begun to take shape with draft floor plans for the site and building.

Please consider joining your neighbors to help shape the future of both investments.

Full agendas are available on the Parks and Recreation Commission page.

Details about these and other projects can be found on the Parks and Recreation Projects page.
