Crime Prevention

Are You Creating Opportunities For Crime?

Publish Date:08/01/2019 2:27 PM

Recently the St. Louis region, Clayton included, has seen an increase in thefts from unlocked vehicles and reports of stolen vehicles.  According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a motor vehicle is stolen approximately every 41 seconds in the United States.  The most common factor in these crimes is vehicles were left unsecured.

The Clayton Police Department would like to remind you to start your #9pmroutine today. Crime prevention is an integral part of our efforts to keep our community safe. By adopting the habits of a #9pmroutine, you can help prevent crimes of opportunity.

It's a #9pmroutine but we'd love it if you followed these steps all day, every day:

-Remove your valuables from your vehicles

-Lock your vehicle doors

-Lock your residences & garages & utilize your exterior lights & security systems

As inconvenient as it may seem, we also recommend removing garage openers from your vehicles.  It’s easy to forget to secure the doorway between your garage & your attached home.  If a criminal can access your garage remote, they may also have access to your residence.

If you see anything suspicious, for your safety, do not approach suspects.  Instead, please contact the Clayton Police Department as soon as possible.
