Weekly Police Incident Report: December 30th - January 5th

For the reporting period of Monday, December 30th - Sunday, January 5th, CPD officers responded to 393 calls for service, including 10 automobile accidents and 27 calls to assist the Fire Department. Among those calls were the following incidents:

You may have noticed an increased police presence in the Hi-Point DeMun neighborhood Monday morning. Officers received reports of subjects wearing dark clothing & looking into vehicles. 2 subjects were identified, however there was no evidence any crimes had been committed.

Later Monday morning, officers responded to the 8200 block of Forsyth after a woman reported $400 in gift cards were taken from her office sometime in the past few weeks. 3 of the cards had been redeemed for online purchases & the 4th card was used by an unknown subject at a Sam’s Club in Texas.

Later Monday, a woman reported she inadvertently left her wallet behind after dining at a Clayton restaurant Christmas Day. The next day she was alerted by her bank that someone had fraudulently used her bank cards for over $2,500 in online purchases.

Tuesday morning, officers responded to Walgreens after 3 male subjects stole cigarettes & cash from the store. They were last seen leaving the area in a pickup truck (no further description). Officers returned to the store early Wednesday morning after a male subject also stole cigarettes & cash. He was last seen leaving the area in a full-sized van with a luggage rack. It is not clear if this subject was involved in the Tuesday morning theft.

Tuesday afternoon, a man reported his bicycle had been stolen from the basement of his residence sometime during the previous 48 hours.

Officers responded to CVS Tuesday evening for a report of shoplifting. The suspect was located nearby & was in possession of items belonging to CVS as well as drug paraphernalia. He admitted to shoplifting the merchandise & was arrested.

The new year began with officers conducting a traffic stop early Wednesday in the area of Clayton Rd. & Crestwood Dr. The ensuing investigation resulted the arrest of the driver for her 3rd DWI offense.

Later Wednesday morning, 3 subjects dined at IHOP & left without fully paying for their meals.

The East St. Louis, IL PD contacted CPD Wednesday afternoon after recovering a vehicle originally stolen from Clayton. The vehicle was reported as stolen from the Old Town neighborhood in July.

Lastly, Friday afternoon, staff returned to the Saint Michael School of Clayton & discovered four electric guitars had been stolen from the music room. Surveillance footage revealed a male subject entered the school Wednesday morning & left with the guitars approximately 2 minutes later. Staff reported a man matching that suspect’s description returned to the school Friday morning & had behaved suspiciously. He was last seen leaving in a black Lincoln. Further investigation revealed the suspect sold the guitars to a local business on Thursday. A suspect has been identified & the investigation in ongoing.
