Weekly Police Incident Report: August 11th - 17th
Officers responded to the intersection of Maryland Ave. and S. Central Ave. Monday afternoon for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries. One of the drivers explained she had been driving eastbound on Maryland Ave. with a green light when another vehicle entered her intersection and struck the passenger side of her car. She complained of stiffness and pain in her neck but declined medical treatment. The impact caused disabling damage to her car, and it was later towed from the scene. The second driver stated she had been driving northbound on S. Central and had not seen the electric signal change before she entered the intersection and could not avoid a collision with the other car.
A short time later, Officers were alerted to a fight between two women in a nearby parking lot. Upon their arrival, they discovered only one of the women had remained on the scene. She explained she had just been to court for a hearing on an order of protection in which she had been the respondent. When the order was dismissed, she was instructed to remain inside the building for 15 minutes to allow the petitioner time to leave the area, and she had complied. However, as she was walking to her vehicle, the petitioner drove up to her, exited her vehicle, and proceeded to assault her physically.
Additionally, the woman verbally threatened to respond to her home later that night. As a result of the altercation, she suffered visible, non-life-threatening injuries but refused medical attention. She was advised to return to the courts building and apply for a temporary order of protection against the other woman.
The second woman responded to the CPD on Tuesday morning to make a statement about her involvement in the altercation. She explained that following the court hearing, the respondent had sent her what she had perceived to be a taunting text message. She admitted that when she saw the woman walking to her car, she had confronted her, and a physical altercation had ensued. She claimed she had also sustained non-life-threatening injuries and had gone to a local hospital for treatment. The report has been forwarded to the City of Clayton Municipal Prosecutor for consideration.
While assisting with the altercation, one of the CPD Officers on the scene noticed a man carrying a glass pipe as he entered the St. Louis County Justice Center building. The pipe was consistent with those commonly used for smoking narcotics and appeared to contain burnt residue. He subsequently arrested the man for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He has an upcoming court date through the Clayton Municipal Court.
A man contacted the CPD on Tuesday afternoon to report check fraud. He explained he had been conducting his monthly account audit the day before and discovered a check he had written in July had been altered. He explained the original check was written payable to a law firm. The check was mailed from the Clayton post office in early July. However, bank records showed the check had been altered to be payable to an individual he did not know. It is unclear when or how the check was compromised. The bank account has since been closed, and the report has been forwarded to the United States Postal Inspectors for further investigation.
Later that day, Officers responded to a delayed report of a firearm being discharged in public. A witness explained she had been in line to purchase food at a local restaurant when she heard a loud bang. She stated that when she looked in the direction she believed the noise had come from, she noted a man and a woman seated at an outdoor dining table had a black firearm lying on the table between them. According to the witness, the couple did not appear to have been alarmed or disturbed by the loud noise and had not attempted to conceal the weapon. Instead, they remained at the table until the woman entered the store to retrieve a to-go order. The witness last saw the couple walking away heading southbound on N. Brentwood Blvd.
While searching the area, Officers located fragments of a spent round as well as the bullet's impact point at the front entrance of the restaurant. The business owner stated she had also seen the couple with a firearm on their table. When she heard the loud noise, the man reportedly apologized to her, explaining that he had been showing the gun to the female and that it had accidentally discharged. Another witness reported he had been walking nearby when he heard a loud "pop." He stated that the male subject at the table had shouted that it was an accident and that he thought the weapon was unloaded. It was at that time that the witness noticed the gun on the table and that the man was holding what appeared to be a gun magazine. Thankfully, no one was injured as a result of this incident. The investigation continues.
Staff at Jimmy John's contacted the CPD Business Officer later Tuesday afternoon to report a theft from the store. They stated a woman had entered the restaurant just before 1 p.m. and walked directly to their online order pick-up space, where she stole four orders. She was seen driving away in a dark gray Chevrolet Impala with heavy damage to the passenger side. Surveillance cameras in the area last captured the car heading southbound on N. Bemiston Ave. from Maryland Ave. An investigation is ongoing.
Late that afternoon, a man responded to the CPD to file a delayed theft report. He stated he believed his credit card had been stolen from the Center of Clayton at the beginning of the month. He explained that he was alerted that his card had been used multiple times in the City of Jennings. However, he had last used the card to purchase lunch at the Subway counter inside the rec center, and he believed he may have inadvertently left the card behind. In total, someone had made four unauthorized transactions totaling over $500. The theft was reported to his bank, and the investigation continues.

The stolen vehicle was recovered on Tuesday, August 19th, in St. Louis City. The investigation continues.
Just before noon, a woman responded to the CPD to file a fraud report. She explained that her firm had written a check, only to discover later it had been altered. The original check was written as payment to an engineer and mailed from her business in early July. However, bank records showed the check that was deposited on July 11th had been altered to be payable to an individual she did not know. The report has been forwarded to the United States Postal Inspectors for further investigation.
A woman contacted the CPD on Friday afternoon to make a delayed report of a vehicle leaving the scene of an accident. She explained she had parked her vehicle in the secured garage of her apartment building on Wednesday afternoon. When she returned on Friday, she discovered fresh damage. She contacted her building's property manager and reviewed video surveillance footage that captured the damage occurring on Thursday afternoon. The video showed another vehicle striking her parked car as it drove past. The striking vehicle traveled further into the garage before the driver exited and walked around the car, apparently looking for damage before driving away.
Officers identified the driver as another tenant of the building and contacted her. She stated she had believed she had struck a concrete pillar and had not realized she had damaged another vehicle. She provided all appropriate contact and insurance information to the victim without further incident.
Later Friday afternoon, Officers responded to a vehicle accident with injuries at the intersection of S. Bemiston and Clayton Rd. A woman explained she had been in the process of turning into the center turn lane of Clayton Rd. from S. Bemiston when she was struck by a vehicle traveling westbound on Clayton Rd. His passenger complained of hip and leg pain and was transported by EMS to a local hospital.

No suspects or witnesses have been identified.
A man reported he was driving southbound on Big Bend Blvd. just before Clayton Rd. early Saturday morning, when he was struck from behind by another car. He described the vehicle as a dark-colored minivan driven by an elderly male. Immediately following the collision, the other driver exited the minivan and verbally confirmed that neither the reporting party nor his passenger had been injured. He then walked back to the van and drove away without providing his contact or insurance information. The reporting party complained of neck pain but declined medical attention on the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
