Weekly Police Incident Report: August 18th - 24th

For the reporting period of Monday, August 18th – Sunday, August 24th, your CPD Officers responded to 638 calls for service, marking the busiest week of the year. Those calls included 25 vehicle crashes and 54 calls to assist other agencies. Among those calls were the following incidents:
Officers responded to southbound I-170 near S. Brentwood Blvd. Monday morning for a report of a vehicle crash involving an ambulance. The driver explained she had been heading southbound on the interstate when traffic ahead of her slowed. She attempted to stop but was unable to avoid a collision with the vehicle directly in front of her. That impact set off a chain reaction by forcing the second vehicle into a third vehicle. Thankfully, no one was injured, and all three vehicles sustained only minor damage.
Later, a resident of the 6300 block of S. Rosebury awoke to discover her vehicle had been damaged sometime over the weekend. She explained that she had parked in front of her home on Friday, and when she looked outside on Monday morning, she initially thought she had left a window down. However, when she went outside to close it, she discovered the glass had been broken out and the contents of her glovebox had been strewn about the interior of her car. Nothing appeared to have been taken, and no suspects or witnesses have been identified.
Later that morning, one of her neighbors reported someone had left the scene of an accident. The resident parked her car at the curb Sunday night and awoke Monday to discover fresh damage to the driver’s side front bumper and fender. No suspects or witnesses have been identified. An investigation is ongoing.

A tenant reported that it appeared that a woman was living in the lower part of the garage. During a search of the garage, the Officer located the woman surrounded by her belongings in her improvised shelter. She was arrested for Trespassing and has an upcoming court date through the Clayton Municipal Court.
That afternoon, Officers responded to the 8100 block of Maryland Ave. for a vehicle crash. One of the drivers explained he had been parked along the street and was attempting to merge into traffic when his car was struck by a passing vehicle. The driver of the striking vehicle stated she had been heading eastbound on Maryland when another car suddenly entered her lane and she was unable to avoid a collision. Both vehicles sustained significant damage and were towed from the scene.
Later, Officers responded to the north end of town for another report of a vehicle leaving the scene of an accident. A man stated he had parked his vehicle in the 200 block of N. Meramec early Monday morning. When he stopped back on his lunch break around noon, nothing appeared to have been amiss. However, when he returned Monday afternoon, he discovered fresh paint transfer on the driver’s side of his front bumper. The incident was captured on camera by a Tesla that was parked nearby. Video showed a Dodge truck striking the victim’s vehicle before driving away. The driver was identified and exchanged all appropriate insurance information.
The CPD Business Officer was patrolling the central business district Monday afternoon when he noticed a woman in the outdoor seating area at Starbucks. He immediately recognized her as someone who had been banned from the property after stealing from the store. He approached the woman and informed her she was under arrest for Trespassing. She was initially cooperative and complied with the Officer’s orders. However, as he was securing her in handcuffs, the woman resisted and kicked the Officer. She was subsequently charged with Trespassing, Resisting Arrest, and Assaulting a Law Enforcement Officer. She has an upcoming court date through the Clayton Municipal Court.
A man was attempting to exit Forest Park Parkway onto S. Brentwood Blvd. Monday evening, he lost control of his vehicle, and struck a curb and guardrail before overturning. Although he was uninjured, his vehicle was not and had to be towed from the scene.
A CPD Officer was on patrol in the east end of town late Monday night when he noticed a vehicle failing to maintain a single lane of traffic as it drove westbound on Clayton Rd. He initiated a traffic stop and learned the vehicle had been involved in a shooting on Highway 64/40, and the driver and a passenger had sustained gunshot wounds. Passersby may have noticed a large police and fire response as personnel from surrounding agencies responded and the victims were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
A bicyclist was riding his bike on Shaw Park Dr. Tuesday morning and had begun to turn onto Corporate Park Drive when a vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign and struck him, knocking him to the ground and damaging his bike. He sustained abrasions on his legs and complained of back pain, and was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment. The driver stated he may not have come to a complete stop at the intersection, resulting in the crash. His vehicle’s front bumper, hood, and windshield were damaged in the collision.
A woman was driving eastbound in the right lane in the 6400 block of Forsyth Tuesday evening when a vehicle from the left lane entered her lane and struck her vehicle. She complained of head and neck pain but refused medical attention while on the scene. The other driver stated he was attempting to turn into a driveway on the south side of the road and had not seen the other vehicle before he changed lanes.
A traffic stop near Clayton Rd. and Seminary Place Tuesday night resulted in the driver’s arrest when Officers learned the man had a revoked driver’s license and was wanted by the Florissant Police Department for Driving While Revoked. He was transported to the St. Louis County Justice Center to await extradition by the Florissant PD and has an upcoming court date through the Clayton Municipal Court.
While checking on a pedestrian in the east end of town late Tuesday night, a CPD Officer learned our department wanted the man for Receiving Stolen Property and Failure to Obey a Lawful Order. The man was subsequently arrested and has an upcoming court date through the Clayton Municipal Court.
Staff at a local hotel contacted the CPD early Wednesday morning to report that three of their personal scooters had been stolen from the employee parking garage. The victims had parked their scooters in the garage on Tuesday afternoon. Hotel security is attempting to retrieve surveillance footage for review. The investigation continues.
A traffic stop on S. Brentwood later that day resulted in the driver’s arrest when the Officer learned the University City Police Department wanted her for Domestic Violence. During an inventory search of her vehicle, the Officer discovered a loaded handgun concealed in the driver’s purse. A check of the weapon’s serial number revealed it had been reported as stolen from St. Louis City. Within the same purse, the Officer recovered two unknown pills believed to be controlled substances. The weapon and pills were seized as evidence and will be sent to the St. Louis County Crime Lab for analysis. Pending those results, this case will be sent to the St. Louis County Prosecutor’s Office for consideration of charges.
Wednesday afternoon, the CPD Business Officer responded to the 8000 block of Carondelet Ave. for a delayed burglary report. The reporting party explained that an unknown man had entered their building on the morning of Thursday, August 14th, and stole multiple items from the company. Surveillance footage showed the man entering from Carondelet Ave. and walking up the stairs to the offices, where he filled two trash bags with stolen property. Among the items taken were office equipment, snacks, and bottles of alcohol. The man returned Friday morning and once again attempted to enter the offices, but was thwarted when he encountered an employee in the office suite. While reviewing the surveillance footage, the Officer recognized the thief as a man with an extensive criminal history, which includes burglaries, larcenies, and trespassing offenses, and attempts are being made to locate him.
Later that afternoon, Officers were called to the interstate for a vehicle crash with injuries. A man stated he had been driving southbound on I-170 when traffic slowed ahead of him. He was unable to stop and struck the vehicle in front of him. His vehicle sustained significant damage and was towed from the scene. His passenger was transported to a local hospital for treatment of a laceration on his hand and leg pain. Neither driver was injured in the crash.

While searching the area, she discovered an unoccupied vehicle near the intersection of Seminary and San Bonita with the driver’s door standing open. Upon closer inspection, she observed that one of the windows had been broken out and an open backpack was discarded on the driver’s seat. A canvas of the neighborhood uncovered that two additional vehicles had their windows broken out. Among the items stolen were tennis shoes and cologne. Nearby surveillance footage showed a dark colored hatchback vehicle driving through the neighborhood without its exterior lights activated. The vehicle stopped directly alongside the victim’s vehicles, and an unknown subject can be seen approaching the vehicles before driving away.
As Officers continued their investigation, they were approached by a resident who reported his vehicle was missing from the 6600 block of Alamo. He explained he had parked on the street on Wednesday evening, and although he left the car unlocked, he removed his keys from the vehicle. When he awoke Thursday morning, his car was nowhere to be seen. The investigation continues.
Later Thursday morning, Officers responded to a report of someone spray painting the bridge supports at S. Hanley and Forest Park Parkway. Upon their arrival, Officers contacted a woman who was painting hearts, stars, and smiley faces over a chalk art installation. She explained that she didn’t know she was doing anything illegal, and upon seeing the chalk display, she had mistaken the space as an open art space. She was issued a summons for Destruction of City Property and has an upcoming court date through the Clayton Municipal Court.
A woman responded to the CPD on Thursday afternoon to report check fraud. She explained she received a notification from her landscape service that she had an overdue bill. She recalled mailing a check for payment in late July and, upon checking her bank statements, discovered the original check had been altered and made payable to someone she did not know. It is unclear when or where the check was compromised. The case has been forwarded to the United States Postal Inspectors for further investigation.

The second driver reported that they had not been injured in the crash, and his vehicle remained operable.
Later that day, a traffic stop in the area of Big Bend Blvd. and Clayton Rd. resulted in the driver’s arrest for Driving While Revoked. While speaking with the man, Officers learned he also had an active warrant for the same offense through the Florissant Police Department. He has an upcoming court date through the Clayton Municipal Court and was transported to the St. Louis County Justice Center to await further action by the Florissant PD.

Upon their arrival, they found a vehicle facing the wrong way on the ramp. Through their investigation, Officers determined the man had been driving while under the influence of alcohol when he lost control of his vehicle. His car skidded across his lane, drove over the concrete median, and struck the guardrail in the oncoming traffic lane. Thankfully, no one was injured in the collision. The driver was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated and has an upcoming court date through the Clayton Municipal Court.
Finally, just after 3:30 a.m., a woman flagged down a CPD Officer in the central business district to report someone had stolen from her. She explained she was staying at a local hotel and had an acquaintance visiting. While she was in her hotel bathroom, the friend stole approximately $400 from her purse. The victim stated she had only known the man for about a month and could only provide his first name and phone number. Officers are attempting to identify the man, and the investigation continues.
