For the reporting period of Monday, December 8th – Sunday, December 14th, your CPD officers responded to 368 calls for service. Those calls included 10 vehicle crashes and 44 calls to assist other agencies. Among those calls were the following incidents:
A resident of the 6300 block of S. Rosebury explained she went to the shared basement of her building to retrieve her laundry and noticed her storage locker was standing open. She explained she had been in the basement less than an hour before, and nothing had been amiss. She immediately notified her husband, who responded to the basement to investigate. He explained he observed the contents of their storage locker strewn about the shared space and had exited the building through a rear door. There, he watched as an unfamiliar man exited a neighboring building with a bag slung across his back and carrying a laundry basket. When the man noticed him, he took off running toward Skinker Blvd. An inventory of their belongings revealed that a childhood keepsake and U.S. and foreign currency had been stolen.
While canvassing the area for a suspect, Officers discovered a baby stroller discarded in the alley between N. Rosebury and Northwood. Inside the stroller were several children’s items and a bag of clothing. A resident of the 6300 block of Northwood recognized the stroller and children’s items as items he had stored in his detached garage. Additional investigation revealed someone had forced entry into the garage. His neighbor reported someone had stolen change and a cellphone mount from her unlocked vehicle. She also recalled seeing an unfamiliar subject walking through their backyard and entering the garage a short time before.
As they continued investigating, Officers were alerted that a man matching the suspect's description was at a nearby gas station. They contacted the man and, after learning he had multiple active warrants for his arrest issued by other jurisdictions, they arrested him. As they spoke with the man, they determined that although he matched the description of our suspect, he had not been in the area at the time the burglaries had been committed. The investigation continues.
Officers responded to the southbound lanes of I-170 for a crash involving multiple vehicles on Wednesday morning. A man explained that another vehicle had made a sudden lane change into his lane, and he had swerved to avoid hitting it. However, he had lost control of his vehicle, causing him to strike a concrete barrier, then rebound into traffic and strike a second car. That collision triggered a chain reaction, with the second vehicle striking a third, and the third striking a fourth. Three of the vehicles were towed from the scene, and one of the drivers was transported to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
That afternoon, Officers responded to the intersection of Big Bend and Wydown for a crash involving a bicycle. The cyclist explained she had been crossing Big Bend heading eastbound on Wydown when she was struck by the vehicle. She was treated on the scene by Clayton EMS personnel for non-life-threatening injuries. The driver stated he had not seen the cyclist in the crosswalk until he was turning onto northbound Big Bend. The crash resulted in minor damage to his headlight.
A passerby contacted the CPD on Wednesday night after finding a cellphone at the intersection of Ridgemoor and Wydown. Officers identified the phone's owner and placed it into evidence for safekeeping until they can arrange to retrieve it.
A traffic stop for an expired license plate on Thursday afternoon resulted in the driver’s arrest after officers learned he had a revoked driver’s license. During a subsequent search of the vehicle, Officers found an open container of alcohol in the driver’s side door and a baggie of suspected methamphetamine partially concealed in the vehicle’s steering column. The items were seized as evidence, and the suspected controlled substance will be sent to the St. Louis County Crime Lab for analysis. Pending lab results, the case will be presented to the St. Louis County Prosecutor’s Office for consideration.
Friday evening, Officers responded to southbound I-170 for a report of a vehicle leaving the scene of a crash near S. Brentwood Blvd. Officers searched the area and found the striking vehicle, a black Jeep, abandoned at I-170 and Galleria Parkway. The SUV was towed, and the investigation continues.
A traffic stop on the north end of town early Saturday morning resulted in the driver’s arrest for DWI. She has an upcoming court date through the Clayton Municipal Court.
Finally, Officers responded to the central business district on Sunday evening for a report of a stolen vehicle. A DoorDash driver stated he had been delivering food to a local hotel when someone stole his car. He explained that because of the low temperature, he had taken his keys with him but had left his vehicle running with the heat on and the doors unlocked. When he returned from dropping off the order, he discovered someone had taken his car. Nearby cameras last recorded someone driving the car near I-64 and S. Brentwood Blvd. The investigation continues.
