For the reporting period of Monday, January 5th – Sunday, January 11th, your CPD Officers responded to 429 calls for service. These included 9 vehicle crashes and 54 requests from other agencies to assist. Among those calls were the following incidents:

A resident contacted the CPD on Monday morning after discovering her bank had processed four unauthorized transactions against her checking account in early December. Upon further investigation, she learned that someone had forged checks with her account and routing numbers, and the unauthorized charges totaled just over $160. The report has been forwarded to the United States Postal Investigative Service for further investigation.

A traffic stop on the east end of town later Monday morning resulted in the driver’s arrest for driving without a license and failure to comply after he refused to follow the Officer’s commands. He was issued summonses and released with an upcoming court date through the Clayton Municipal Court.

Monday afternoon, Officers arrested a man for panhandling in the roadway at the off-ramp from southbound I-170 at S. Brentwood Blvd. During a search of his person, Officers discovered he was in possession of a driver’s license and several debit cards which did not belong to him. Their respective owners were contacted, and at their request, the cards were destroyed. The man has an upcoming court date through the Clayton Municipal Court.

A man contacted the CPD on Tuesday morning after discovering someone had damaged his vehicle overnight. He explained he had parked in the 8100 block of Forsyth on Monday afternoon. When he returned, he noticed that a passenger window had been broken and that the steering column was damaged, as if someone had attempted to steal the vehicle. No suspects or witnesses have been identified. The investigation continues.

That afternoon, the CPD Business Officer was conducting a check of a vacant property in the central business district when he found a window broken out of a door in the garage. Upon closer inspection, it appeared someone had forced entry into the building. During a search, officers found a second broken window on the 3rd floor and found a man trespassing inside the building. The man was subsequently arrested for Burglary 2nd degree, Property Damage 1st degree, and Possession of Burglary Tools. The case was presented to the St. Louis County Prosecutor’s Office, and warrants were issued. The man is currently being held without bond at the St. Louis County Justice Center.

A traffic stop in the area of Clayton Rd. and Cromwell Dr. later that afternoon resulted in the driver’s arrest after Officers discovered she was wanted by the St. Louis County Police Department for Stealing - $750 or More, a felony. Additionally, Officers determined the woman had been driving without a valid driver’s license. She was issued a summons and has an upcoming court date through the Clayton Municipal Court.

Officers responded to a local bank on Wednesday morning to speak with an employee about a fraud investigation. The woman stated that she suspected a former employee had been making unauthorized transactions. She explained that the woman had been terminated in November. In December, multiple checks totaling over $31,000 were flagged as altered or fictitious after being deposited electronically into her account. She stated the bank hadn’t been alerted to the deposits until the beginning of January. The investigation continues.

A resident of the 6300 block of S. Rosebury contacted the CPD on Thursday morning to report that someone had broken into their storage locker in their apartment building. He explained that he had discovered that the metal latch on the door had been pulled away, and a coffee grinder and a hatchet were missing. No suspects or witnesses have been identified. The investigation is ongoing.

Later that morning, Officers were called to the Glenridge neighborhood regarding a man leaving the scene of an accident. The reporting party explained he had been seated in his parked vehicle when another driver attempted to parallel park their truck in front of him. As the driver attempted to park, he struck his vehicle and another one. The driver exited his truck and briefly examined the other vehicles before walking away. Through their investigation, Officers learned the man was part of a construction crew working in the area. Additionally, they discovered that the man’s driver’s license was revoked, and he was wanted by the St. Louis County Police Department for a probation violation. Officers attempted to speak with the man; however, it quickly became apparent that he was deliberately attempting to evade officers. His truck was subsequently towed from the scene, and Officers are continuing their attempts to locate him.

A short time later, Officers were called to a local hotel, where employees found that the kitchen and the manager’s office had been ransacked. Upon reviewing surveillance footage, the manager discovered that three teenagers entered the building through an employee entrance on Wednesday evening, blocked camera views in the kitchen and office, and remained there for hours. The staff is conducting an extensive inventory to determine whether anything was taken. The investigation continues.

Residents of the 7700 block of Kingsbury awoke Friday morning to discover someone had shattered the windows of their vehicles overnight. Nothing appeared to have been taken, and no suspects or witnesses have been identified. The investigation is ongoing.

Officers responded to the east end of town on Friday afternoon for a vehicle crash. One of the drivers explained she had been driving southbound on DeMun, approaching San Bonita, when another vehicle suddenly pulled in front of her. She stated she attempted to stop but was unable to avoid a collision. The other driver stated she had checked for oncoming traffic before proceeding into the intersection and had not seen the car approaching from the north. Both vehicles sustained extensive damage and were towed from the scene. Thankfully, neither driver was injured in the crash.

Finally, in early December, witnesses reported that two individuals wearing hi-visibility vests had stolen packages from buildings in the Moorlands neighborhood. They were seen moving from building to building, removing Amazon packages and loading them into a silver Honda with Illinois plates. The subjects left before officers arrived, and we asked for assistance in identifying them. The individuals have been identified as juveniles, and the case has been forwarded to the St. Louis County Family Courts for further action.

Anyone with information about these or other investigations is asked to contact the Clayton Police Department at (314) 645-3000. Until next week, stay safe.
