For the reporting period of Monday, January 19th – Sunday, January 25th, your CPD Officers responded to 406 calls for service. Officers handled one burglary, 15 vehicle crashes, and assisted other agencies 47 times. Among those calls were the following incidents:
Officers responded to the intersection of Big Bend Blvd. and Clayton Rd. for a vehicle crash on Monday morning. A man explained he had been driving northbound on Big Bend. A second vehicle turned into the intersection in front of him, and he was unable to avoid a collision. The second vehicle sustained heavy damage and was towed from the scene. Thankfully, neither driver was injured.
A resident contacted the CPD on Wednesday morning to report that she had been a victim of a scam. She explained that she had received a call from someone claiming to be a representative of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid, who convinced her to provide personal identification information over the phone. She was instructed to report the incident through the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3.gov). You can find additional information on detecting and reporting Medicare impersonation scams

Thursday evening, Mayor McAndrew and the Mayor's Youth Advisory Council (MYAC) visited the CPD. Participants met with Chief Smith to learn about policing in Clayton and current crime trends before experiencing our virtual training simulator with Cpl. Stevens. You can learn more about the MYAC

Later that night, Officers responded to an apartment building on the north end of town after a witness reported seeing two unfamiliar men using illicit substances in the stairwell. A resident reported seeing one of the men flee as the officers arrived. Officers searched the area but did not locate him. They found the second man in the stairwell with a bag containing suspected methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Officers seized all items as evidence and submitted them to the St. Louis County Crime Lab for analysis. They arrested the man for Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Pending lab results, the case will be forwarded to the St. Louis County Prosecutor’s Office for consideration.
A man reported he had been driving southbound in the right lane of S. Hanley Rd. on Saturday night. He explained that as he approached the intersection with Middle Polo Drive, the vehicle to his left suddenly cut in front of him to turn right. He was unable to stop and struck the car. Neither driver was injured. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage and were towed from the scene.
Finally, a resident of the 6300 block of N. Rosebury contacted the CPD on Sunday evening to report a burglary in the shared basement of her apartment building. She explained that someone had pried open the door of her storage room and rummaged through her belongings. A second resident stated his storage unit had also been rifled through. They reported that winter clothing, ski and snowboard gear, and a TV had been stolen from their units. Officers noted it appeared someone had entered the building by damaging a basement window. No suspects or witnesses have been identified. The investigation continues.
