The Clayton Police Department provides free gun locks to residents upon request as part of our ongoing commitment to firearm safety. Safe Firearm & Ammunition Disposal

Officers are occasionally contacted by residents who have firearms or ammunition they no longer wish to keep. The safest and easiest way to dispose of a firearm or ammunition is to request police assistance at your home.

Preferred Method: Officer Response to Your Home

• Call the non-emergency police dispatch number: (314) 645-3000

• Request an officer to respond for firearm or ammunition disposal

• Leave the firearm or ammunition in a safe, secure location

• When the officer arrives, direct them to the item

• The officer will ensure the firearm is unloaded, rendered safe, and take possession of it

Bringing a Firearm or Ammunition to the Police Department:

While not the preferred method, residents may bring firearms or ammunition to the Clayton Police Department if necessary. If you choose to do so, please follow these steps carefully:

• Ensure the firearm is unloaded

• Place the firearm in the trunk or rear of your vehicle, separate from ammunition

• Bring a valid driver’s license or identification

• Upon arrival, leave the firearm or ammunition secured in your vehicle

• Notify the front desk; an officer will respond to take possession and complete a report

Storage & Disposal Process

• All firearms and ammunition are temporarily stored in a secure vault

• A serial number check is conducted to ensure the item is not stolen

• Items are then transported to a secure facility where they are properly destroyed

• A police report number will be provided for your records

Firearm Safety Guidelines

Please follow these safety rules whenever handling or transporting firearms:

• Ensure all firearms are unloaded

• Secure firearms in a locked container whenever possible

• Store ammunition in a box or designated ammo can

• When transporting:

  • Lock firearms in the trunk

  • Store ammunition in the glove box or interior compartment

• Drive directly to the police department if transporting items

Military Ordnance & Explosives

If you encounter any type of military ordnance or explosive materials—such as grenades, pipe bombs, dynamite, or containers of gunpowder—do not handle them, regardless of size or packaging. Contact the police department immediately by calling 9-1-1.
