When Outdoor Warning Sirens Go Off, Take Shelter

County Warning System Improves Geographic Accuracy

Publish Date:03/16/2026 10:48 AM

Warning Sirens Mean Take Shelter Now

St. Louis County's tornado siren warning operations from the St. Louis County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) have been updated and are different from what you may be used to. The old warning system triggered sirens countywide, regardless of the sighting location. Now, the outdoor warning system is divided into fixed geographic zones for improved accuracy.

This new system prioritizes warning residents in closest proximity to the danger, so when you hear a siren, you know there is a threat relevant to your immediate area. When you hear an outdoor warning siren, take shelter!

Be informed at your fingertips: get push notifications on emergency weather situations on your cellphone. When you opt in, OEM can send timely notifications on severe weather alerts, watches and warnings as well as information in reference to the monthly Outdoor Warning Siren System test.

To sign up, text SLCOEM to 78015.

Clayton falls within the Central Activation Zone (in orange), per St. Louis County.
