Publish Date:04/27/2026 1:06 PM

May is National Bike Month, and Clayton offers excellent opportunities for cyclists of all levels to explore the area on two wheels. Whether you're a seasoned rider or just getting started, here's your guide to the best trails and routes in and around Clayton, thanks to our friends at Trailnet and Great Rivers Greenway!

Centennial Greenway: Clayton's Premier Trail

The crown jewel of Clayton cycling is the Centennial Greenway, offering two excellent segments perfect for riders of all abilities. The Shaw Park to Olive section provides a scenic route through the heart of Clayton, while the Warson Park to Dielman stretch extends your riding options even further.

What makes the Centennial Greenway special? Each route comes with downloadable PDF guides available at greatriversgreenway.org that include detailed information about trail lengths, surface types, and available amenities. You can also explore the full interactive greenways map to plan your perfect ride.

Connecting to the City

For those looking to venture downtown or deeper into St. Louis, Clayton's bike infrastructure makes it easy. Riders can access Metro and bus stops throughout the area, both of which accommodate bicycles with bike racks on buses and bike alcoves on trains.

The Maryland Avenue bike path offers another valuable connection, running from Gay Avenue to Hanley Road. This route starts with shared lane markings (sharrows) before transitioning into a parking-protected bike lane. From Hanley, cyclists can continue through quieter neighborhood streets into Skinker-DeBaliviere, avoiding heavier traffic on major thoroughfares.

Get Ready to Ride

New to cycling or want to brush up on road safety? The League of American Bicyclists offers excellent educational resources at bikeleague.org/ridesmart to help you ride confidently and safely.

Mark your calendar for May 15, 2026, when Trailnet hosts Bike to Work (or Wherever) Day. This city-wide celebration features hospitality stations across St. Louis, encouraging everyone to experience the joy of cycling. (Clayton residents interested in hosting a station can contact Great Rivers Greenway for more  information.)

For the latest cycling events and programming throughout the season, check the Great Rivers Greenway calendar, which is regularly updated with new activities as the weather warms up.
