Publish Date:05/19/2026 10:54 AM

Staying aware of your surroundings and planning ahead can help reduce your risk of becoming a victim of crime. Simple habits can make a big difference in keeping yourself and others safe.

Stay Alert

Being aware of what is happening around you is one of the best ways to stay safe.

  • Pay attention to your surroundings at all times.
  • Avoid distractions like texting, scrolling on your phone, or wearing headphones while walking.
  • Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, leave the area and seek help.
  • Be mindful of your location and know where you are going before you leave.

Travel Safely

Planning ahead can help you avoid dangerous situations.

  • Let someone know your route, destination, and expected return time.
  • Avoid taking shortcuts through isolated areas, alleys, or poorly lit spaces.
  • Whenever possible, use the buddy system and travel with a friend or family member.
  • Walk or run in well-lit, busy areas with regular foot traffic.
  • Avoid walking alone at night whenever possible.

Protect Your Belongings

Thieves often target unattended or easy-to-grab items.

  • Carry your purse, backpack, or bag close to your body.
  • Never leave your purse, wallet, or phone unattended in a shopping cart or public place.
  • Carry only the cash you need.
  • Keep valuables out of sight whenever possible.
  • Always carry a form of identification with you.

Use Your Phone Wisely

Your phone can help in an emergency, but distractions can put you at risk.

  • Keep your cell phone with you in case of emergencies.
  • Stay focused on your surroundings instead of messages or social media.
  • Avoid walking while distracted by your phone.

Watch for Scams

Criminals often use pressure, fear, or promises of easy money to trick people.

  • Be cautious of offers that sound too good to be true.
  • Never withdraw money or send funds to someone you do not know.
  • Do not share personal or banking information with strangers.

Report Suspicious Activity

If you see something concerning, report it right away.

  • Call 911 immediately if you are the victim or witness of a crime.
  • Report suspicious behavior to local police as soon as possible.
  • Try to remember important details such as descriptions, locations, and vehicle information.

Staying alert, planning ahead, and looking out for one another helps keep our community safe.
