Publish Date:05/19/2026 11:16 AM

Taking a few simple precautions can help reduce your risk and keep you safer on the road!

Stay Safe While Driving

Being prepared can help you avoid dangerous situations.

  • Keep your vehicle in good working condition.
  • Keep your gas tank at least half full whenever possible.
  • Before getting into your vehicle, check the front and back seats.
  • Stay aware of your surroundings when entering or leaving your vehicle.
  • Never pick up hitchhikers.

If Your Vehicle Breaks Down

Your safety should always come first during a roadside emergency.

  • Pull over to a safe location as far off the roadway as possible.
  • Turn on your hazard lights.
  • Stay inside your vehicle with the doors locked while waiting for help.
  • Call 911 or roadside assistance if needed.
  • Do not accept help from strangers if you feel unsafe.

Protect Your Vehicle

Simple habits can make your vehicle a less attractive target for thieves.

  • Always lock your doors and roll up your windows, even while driving.
  • Park in a secure garage or a well-lit area whenever possible.
  • Remove valuables such as wallets, purses, phones, bags, shopping items, and electronics from your vehicle.
  • Do not leave items in plain view, even for a short time.
  • Store valuables in the trunk or take them with you.
  • Always remove keys, key fobs, garage remotes, and spare keys from your vehicle.
  • Never leave your vehicle running and unattended.
  • Consider using a steering wheel lock or other anti-theft device.

If You See Suspicious Activity

Vehicle thieves often target multiple cars in a short amount of time.

  • Call the police immediately if you see someone looking into or breaking into vehicles.
  • Do not confront suspicious individuals.
  • Try to remember important details such as:
    • Number of suspects
    • Clothing descriptions
    • Vehicle descriptions
    • Direction of travel
