Thank you for your patience while Cpl. Schwartz was away from the office last week. Without further ado, we give you a two-week edition of the Weekly Police Incident Report. For the reporting period of Monday, July 13th – Sunday, July 26th, your CPD officers responded to 898 calls for service. Those calls included 26 vehicle crashes and 97 requests to assist other agencies. Among those calls were the following incidents:
On Monday morning, July 13th, Officers responded to the intersection of N. Hanley Rd. and Forsyth Blvd. for a vehicle crash. One of the drivers stated he had been turning westbound onto Forsyth Blvd. with a green arrow when he was struck by a vehicle driving westbound on Forsyth. Officers observed that the man was bleeding from his mouth. However, neither he nor his passenger complained of any injuries. They were evaluated on the scene by EMS personnel but refused further medical treatment.
The other driver stated she could not recall the status of the traffic signal as she entered the intersection. She complained of chest pain while on the scene. However, after an evaluation by EMS personnel, she refused further medical treatment. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
A short time later, a resident of the Clayshire neighborhood reported that someone had stolen her registration tabs from her vehicle license plates. She last recalled seeing them affixed to her SUV on Sunday, July 12th. The tabs were entered as stolen. No suspects or witnesses have been identified.
Late Wednesday night, July 15th, Officers were alerted that a stolen vehicle had entered our jurisdiction. One of our Officers observed the SUV driving southbound on Big Bend Blvd. towards Clayton Rd. and initiated a traffic stop. While speaking with the occupants of the stolen car, they learned the passenger had active warrants for his arrest. Through further investigation, they learned the man was wanted by the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD) for Resisting Arrest By Fleeing Creating A Substantial Risk Of Serious Injury or Death and for Stealing a Firearm. The warrants were confirmed, and they arrested the man.
Upon confirming the vehicle had been stolen from Centralia, Illinois, they arrested the driver for Tampering 1st degree. He claimed he had purchased the vehicle from an acquaintance but had not received the title or a bill of sale. His passenger was also charged with Tampering 2nd degree. Both men were later released into the custody of the St. Louis County Justice Center. The case will be presented to the St. Louis County Prosecutor’s Office for consideration.
Officers responded to a crash involving multiple vehicles on Thursday evening, July 16th. One of the drivers stated he had been driving southbound on I-170, approaching S. Brentwood Blvd., when traffic abruptly slowed. He explained he had been unable to stop in time and struck the vehicle ahead of him, setting off a chain reaction. In all, four vehicles were involved in the crash. Two of the vehicles were badly damaged and were towed from the interstate. One of the drivers complained of head pain while on the scene and was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation.
On Friday night, July 17th, Officers responded to a local hotel bar for a report of a customer stealing. The manager explained a man had purchased food and drinks and failed to pay the full amount of his bill before leaving. According to the hostess, the man had given her his driver’s license and stated he was going to an ATM to withdraw money. When the man had not returned after an hour, the staff notified the CPD. According to the bar manager, the man had returned after the bar closed and was instructed to come back during normal business hours on Saturday. However, he failed to return and has made no further attempts to pay his bill. The investigation continues.
Officers returned to the same hotel on Saturday afternoon, July 18th. An employee explained he had left his vehicle parked in the garage on Wednesday, the 15th because one of the wheels had been damaged, rendering it inoperable. He stated he had planned to repair the car on Saturday. However, when he arrived, he discovered someone had damaged the driver’s side door handle and stolen his wallet and the vehicle’s battery. He later learned someone had attempted to use his debit card to make an unauthorized purchase. No suspects or witnesses have been identified. The investigation is ongoing.
Later that day, Officers responded to the Moorlands neighborhood for a report of a vehicle leaving the scene of an accident. A woman stated she had parked her vehicle on the street in the 7500 block of Parkdale. When she returned, she discovered another vehicle had struck her rear bumper and pushed her vehicle forward. The driver was no longer in the area, and the striking car remained pushed against her vehicle. Officers attempted to locate the vehicle’s owner to no avail, and the vehicle was towed from the scene. The investigation continues.
Early Tuesday morning, July 21st, Officers responded to CVS for a report of theft in progress. As Officers were en route to the call, they learned the suspects were leaving the area in a gray older model minivan. A CPD Officer observed the vehicle driving at a high rate of speed eastbound on Clayton Rd. and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The vehicle failed to stop, and Officers responded to the store to continue their investigation. Staff explained two men had stolen several packs of toilet paper and cleaning supplies before fleeing the area. The investigation continues.
Staff at a local spa contacted the CPD on Wednesday morning, July 22nd after discovering an online order had been purchased with a stolen debit card. The Office manager explained that a man had used the card online to make a purchase of over $1,000 in supplies on the 15th, and a man had responded to the spa and collected the order. The same card was used to attempt a second online purchase the following day, but the order had been canceled. She stated she was contacted by the cardholder on the 17th and learned that the transactions were unauthorized.
Officers spoke with the card account holder and learned his card information had been compromised while he was out of state earlier this summer. He stated he had contacted the spa as soon as he had observed the unauthorized transactions. A suspect has been identified, and the investigation continues.
That afternoon, Officers responded to the central business district for a report of a woman causing a disturbance. Upon their arrival, they observed the woman walking into traffic, impeding traffic, and yelling at cars. They learned the woman had parked her vehicle nearby and spoke with her passenger, who suggested the woman had been drinking alcohol and using other substances. Following a roadside investigation, Officers arrested the woman for driving while impaired. She has an upcoming court date through the Clayton Municipal Court.
A short time later, a resident of the Clayshire neighborhood reported someone had stolen a package from her apartment building. She explained she had received a notification that the package had been delivered on Tuesday morning. However, surveillance cameras showed that a food delivery driver stole the package from the apartment lobby later that afternoon. The suspect has not been identified, and the investigation is ongoing.
Late that night, Officers responded to Forest Park Parkway near I-170 to check on a vehicle blocking the eastbound lanes. Upon their arrival, Officers found the driver and her two passengers impaired by an unknown substance. They were all transported to local hospitals for evaluation and treatment. During a subsequent search of the vehicle, Officers discovered a bag containing drug paraphernalia and suspected narcotics. Additionally, they discovered a firearm concealed between the front passenger seat and the vehicle’s center console. A computer inquiry later revealed that the passenger who had occupied that seat was a convicted felon and should not have had a firearm. All items were seized as evidence, and the investigation continues.
Officers responded to a local hotel on Thursday evening, July 23rd, after a guest reported a theft. The man explained that he had been staying in the same room all week and that Thursday was the first time he had not placed the “Do Not Disturb” sign on his door. When he returned that evening, he noticed that his room had not been cleaned. At first glance, everything appeared to be as he had left it that morning. However, he later discovered that his PlayStation controller was missing. He stated he had searched the room and was unable to find the controller. The general manager was notified and will check the logs to determine whether anyone had accessed his room in his absence.
Officers responded to S. Hanley Rd. near Shirley Dr. on Friday evening, July 24th for a vehicle crash. One of the drivers explained she had been driving in the northbound lanes when the vehicle in front of her suddenly slowed. She stated she attempted to slow but had been unable to prevent the crash. Her vehicle was later towed from the scene. The driver of the other vehicle explained he had slowed because the car ahead of him had abruptly slowed to make a turn. As he slowed, his car was struck from behind. He complained the crash had caused pain in his neck, but he refused medical attention.
A traffic stop near the intersection of S. Brentwood Blvd. and Bonhomme Ave. late on Friday night resulted in the arrest of the driver. As the Officer spoke with the woman, he observed signs of impairment. Following a roadside investigation, she was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated. She has an upcoming court date through the Clayton Municipal Court.
Finally, IHOP employees requested assistance after a man and a woman failed to pay for their meal on Saturday morning, July 25th. A server explained she had waited on a couple who had ordered and consumed several items, racking up a bill of nearly $90. However, as their meal came to an end, the woman excused herself under the guise of retrieving something from their vehicle. The man then left the restaurant without stopping at the cash register to pay for their meal. The server followed the man to the parking lot, and when she asked if he intended to pay the tab, he informed her he didn’t have any money. The couple was last seen leaving in a black GMC pickup truck. The investigation continues.
