Roles and Duties

The Board of Aldermen recently voted to approve an ordinance establishing a new Economic Development Committee for the City of Clayton, to advise the Board of Aldermen on matters related to economic growth and vitality. The Committee will address the broader vitality of the business community, promoting sustainable growth across all sectors of Clayton.

The committee's primary function will be to serve in a purely advisory capacity to the Mayor and Board of Aldermen. It will provide recommendations on:

• Promoting economic development initiatives across all business districts that align with the City's economic development policy, comprehensive plan, and strategic goals
• Evaluating and developing actionable recommendations related to business retention, expansion, and attraction strategies, including potential incentives or programs
• Reviewing and providing recommendations on economic development aspects of proposed zoning changes, master plans, and capital improvement projects
• Identifying and analyzing economic trends, challenges, and opportunities affecting the City of Clayton
• Advising on partnerships with regional economic development organizations, chambers of commerce, and other stakeholders to enhance the City's economic competitiveness

The committee will consist of seven (7) voting members appointed by the Mayor with Board of Aldermen approval. Members should have experience and interest in, and an expressed commitment to, economic development, business, real estate, or urban planning. Members should also represent a variety of industries and commercial interests. Two (2) Aldermen appointed by the Mayor and approved by the Board of Aldermen on an annual basis, may serve as non-voting liaisons to the Committee. At their discretion, the Board of Aldermen may add additional ex-officio (non-voting) positions as it deems necessary.
