The City levies an 8% gross receipts tax on utility companies conducting business in the City. Utility taxes are passed on to the customers by the utility company and remitted to the City each subsequent month. The utility companies operating within the City include Ameren UE, Laclede Gas, Missouri American Water and multiple telephone companies. Utility tax revenue is allocated to the General Fund and used for general operating purposes. The City budgeted $5,597,800 in utility tax revenue for Fiscal Year 2016. Electrical utility taxes are 49% of the overall utility tax revenue while telephone utility tax is 30%, gas utility tax is 15%, and water utility tax is 6% of the total, as illustrated in the chart to the right.
