The Clayton Fire Department Bureau of Fire Prevention has been making annual fire prevention inspections of the schools, businesses, churches, high-rise buildings, hotels and universities for many years. In addition, the Bureau performs inspections and plan reviews for new construction and renovations. The Clayton Fire Department strives to assist the owners and occupants in providing a safe environment in which to live and work.
While we cannot prevent all fires from happening, we can strive to maintain a high level of fire safety and attempt to eliminate as many hazards as possible. The City of Clayton adopted the 2015 International Fire Code. As an aid in the areas below we have provided some links to permits, guidelines for restaurants using liquefied petroleum gas, links to forms that contain what our Bureau looks for during as acceptance inspection and log book requirements.

- Construction Permit
For Construction Permit Applicants: ATTENTION APPLICANTS: Effective January 1, 2016, the Clayton Fire Department requests two (2) sets signed and sealed drawings by the design professional, to be submitted with the application for plan review. One set will be returned with the permit for field use. In addition, if the drawings sheets are larger than 42” x 30” and includes more than three (3) sheets, we will require an electronic copy be included with your submittal for our retention/archive. The electronic file format should be .pdf and preferred storage device is a CD or USB flash stick.

Heating for Restaurant Outdoor Dining
- The Clayton Fire Department would like to help you make your outdoor dining a safe experience for you, your staff and your clientele. If you should decide to use LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas), please be aware of the safety requirements listed below. LPG (Liquefied Propane Gas) is a heavier than air hydrocarbon fuel. LPG is an extremely flammable compressed gas. The liquefied product expands 270 its liquid volume when returning to vapor. LPG tanks or containers shall not be stored inside buildings.
An Operational permit is required for the storage of LP-gas. Tank or container sizes are limited to 20 pounds maximum. Smoking is not allowed within 25 feet of the tanks or containers. The tanks and containers must be stored outside of buildings within a cage or other suitable enclosure to protect against tampering. Storage shall not be within 20 feet of any exit access doors, stairways or areas intended to be used as a means of egress. Tanks and containers must be protected from sunlight. Weeds, grass, brush, trash and other combustible materials must be kept a minimum of 10 feet from LP-gas tanks or containers.
- Always follow manufacturer's directions.
- Make sure connections are tight. If leaks are present, turn off and check connections. Do not operate until the leak is fixed.
- Be aware that if a leak has occurred, LPG is heavier than air and will settle in low spots.
- Keep cylinders upright, even when empty, to ensure the pressure relief valve can operate effectively.
- Protect cylinders from direct sun.
Call 911 if a leak or fire occurs when using LP Gas equipment.
Food Truck Guidelines (Effective January 1, 2016)
- This guide is to help ensure your mobile food unit is compliant with the Clayton Fire Department’s current safety regulations. This guide should serve as an initial planning tool for compliance. It does not remove the responsibility of the owner to comply with all laws applicable to the mobile food unit.
