The Parks and Recreation Department's Mission is "To improve the quality of life for our citizens through the provision of comprehensive leisure services and recreational opportunities to individuals of all ages, abilities, and interests in a safe, healthy, and pleasant environment."
The Department of Parks and Recreation is divided into two divisions - The Recreation Division and The Parks Division. The Recreation Division’s responsibility is to oversee the development, expansion, and implementation of a wide array of programs, services and facilities and coordinate seasonal employees and personnel as well as volunteers. The Parks Division is responsible for effective and efficient maintenance services for park grounds, recreational facilities, park equipment and vehicles, park landscaping services, construction projects and special event support for the Recreation Division and the City of Clayton. Clayton Parks and Recreation earned national accreditation in 2012 and re-accreditation in 2017. National accreditation through CAPRA (Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies) is an extensive multi-year process, which includes the completion of an application and detailed self-assessment report, a site visit by a committee of experienced park and recreation professionals, and a final assessment completed by the agency and the Commission. Accredited agencies must fully meet 36 standards deemed fundamental to a quality agency and at least 92 of the remaining standards representing elements of effective and efficient park and recreation operations.
