On September 10, 2024, the Clayton Board of Aldermen adopted the Tenant Bill of Rights to inform renters of their rights and ensure equitable housing practices across the community. This program, effective as of November 1, 2024, is designed to educate tenants on existing regulations that ensure safe, accessible, and affordable housing for all residents while promoting fair treatment for both tenants and housing providers.

The Tenant Bill of Rights addresses common barriers to fair housing access that tenants may face, such as discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, familial status, and source of income.

Key components of the Tenant Bill of Rights include:

  • Posting Requirements: Property owners and managers of rental properties with three or more units are required to post the Tenant Bill of Rights in a location easily visible to residents.
  • Tenant Information: Property owners or designated managers must provide tenants with a copy of the Tenant Bill of Rights when signing a new lease, ensuring all leaseholders are aware of their rights and protections.

By adopting this ordinance, Clayton reaffirms its commitment to fostering a community that values fairness, equity, and access for all. The Tenant Bill of Rights empowers individuals and strengthens our community by promoting a more secure, respectful, and inclusive rental environment.
