Public safety has been a cornerstone of the Clayton community since the City's earliest days. Law enforcement originally operated under a Marshal system, but as Clayton continued to grow, City leaders recognized the need for a more comprehensive approach to policing. In 1920, the City established the Clayton Police Department, laying the foundation for the professional law enforcement agency that serves our community today.

What began with a single full-time officer has evolved into a modern police department staffed by 48 commissioned officers and six professional staff members. For more than a century, the Clayton Police Department has grown alongside the community, adapting to changing needs while remaining committed to protecting lives, preserving public safety, and building strong relationships with those we serve.

Throughout its history, the Clayton Police Department has earned a reputation as one of the premier municipal law enforcement agencies in St. Louis County.

Our commitment to professional development, advanced training, and continuous improvement has helped establish a culture of excellence that is recognized throughout the region.

That commitment to excellence is reflected in our accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). In 2000, the Clayton Police Department became one of the first law enforcement agencies in Missouri to achieve this prestigious national accreditation. CALEA accreditation demonstrates our dedication to professional standards, accountability, transparency, and exceptional public service.
